Since I’m out in California for a couple of months I have access to the dozen or so citrus trees in our backyard. We have a variety of several different types of oranges, tangerines, and lemons. I love oranges and especially tangerines, but one can only do so much with lemons. I felt like the lemons were basically useless until I found out about the benefits of lemon water.
Most of us enjoy a nice glass of lemonade on a hot summers day, but the reality is lemonade is pretty horrible for you. It’s not the water or the lemons that are bad for you, but rather the high sugar content of lemonade. The average glass of lemonade has 1/6 cup of sugar. That’s about 3 tablespoons of sugar in a single 8 ounce glass.
We all know that we are supposed to drink eight glasses of water everyday. The health benefits of doing so are pretty conclusive. But did you know, that’s squeezing a little lemon juice into your glass can help even more? The science is quite convincing and here’s why:
What’s Inside A Lemon?
Lemons are packed full of vitamin C, vitamin B, and vitamin B2. They also contain minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium.
The Benefits Of Lemon Water
There are over one dozen benefits from drinking lemon water. I’ve listed what I consider to be the 4 most interesting benefits of drinking lemon water.
Lower your pH balance – Even though lemons are acidic, they become alkaline in the body. It would take another post altogether to explain why this is important, but most Americans suffer from an acidic pH imbalance. This is because the typical American diet is far too high in acid-producing animal products like meat, eggs and dairy, and far too low in alkaline-producing foods like fresh vegetables. Drinking lemon water helps with this.
Helps with digestion – Lemon water can help with many digestive problems including nausea, heartburn, and parasites. If you drink lemon juice regularly it helps your bowels eliminate waste more effectively. Lemon juice also helps your liver produce more bile which helps digest your food more quickly.
Good for your skin – Since lemon juice is high in vitamin C, it helps rejuvenate skin from within. Consuming lemon water everyday can help improve the quality of your skin.
Controls high blood pressure – Lemon juice is also high in potassium which, among other things, helps control high blood pressure and reduces mental stress and depression.
