Update from 30,000 feet

This is the first flight I’ve ever been on that has wifi access, which is pretty cool. In years past I’ve been traveling exclusively on Continental and they are still in the dark ages when it comes to having Internet on the plane. It’s been over a year since I’ve flown with them, but as far as I know they still don’t have it. It seems like most of the other major carriers have installed wifi, which makes traveling so much more enjoyable. For people like me who have a hard time staying “unplugged” it helps even more. Anyway, today I’m heading back to Dallas from Philly and this American Airlines flight has wifi. If it feels like it’s been ages since I posted to my blog, that’s because it has! My last post was in early December and since then a lot has been going on in my life. I’ve obviously been really busy with work, which never seems to change, but there has been a string of people visiting us and then some traveling too. The reality is setting in now that this is going to be a really long post to catch up on everything…. Google News Update Since the last post I made was about getting accepted into Google News I think it’s fitting to lead off with that… Since getting accepted into Google News in early December we’ve been posting about 3-5 news articles per day Monday – Friday and then a couple over the weekend too. The traffic results are simply stunning. I predicted a traffic increase of 2x-3x once we got accepted,...

Welcome to Google News

I’ve written several posts about the importance of good content and the power of getting your site accepted into Google News. In fact, I wrote a detailed post about how to get your site submitted here. Not every site is a good fit for this strategy, but if your site has a theme that naturally posts a lot of content, especially news content, then Google News might be right for you. We were in the process of getting websitehosting.com submitted to Google News before we sold it, but none of our other sites really had the breadth of content needed; that is until we purchased ira.com. We’ve been writing an average of 2-3 posts per day on IRA.com since we purchased it; about 2.5 weeks ago I decided it was time to submit it to Google News. Then, yesterday, I got the most wonderful email: “Thank you for your note. We’ve reviewed your site and will be adding it to our index for Google News. In order for your content to be included in Google News, please follow at least one of the two options below:” To say the least, I was really happy and excited to get approved. We put a lot of work into this project over the past couple of months and getting accepted to Google News is going to bring a welcome increase in traffic. I estimate that we can get at least an additional 1,000 unique visitors to the site each day. Not only will this traffic undoubtedly translate into more sales, it will also attract more natural links. We’ve had sites in Google...

Terran Marketing Projects Update

It’s been a busy few weeks for us at Terran Marketing. I’m actually personally impressed with the amount we’ve been able to accomplish behind the scenes over the past 4-6 weeks. For those of you who know me personally, you know that’s hard to do. All our hard work is about to pay off in the form of 4 sites launches that will be happening between now and September 10th. Graphic Design We purchased this site in the middle of July and about 6 weeks later I’m excited to say that we are on the cusp of launching version 1.0 of this site. Since Graphic Design is such a broad term, we are making a portal site that will focus on graphic design firms, degrees, jobs, and software. In the mean time we’ve written a bunch of content, which we’ve posted to our temporary site. This has helped us jump a couple spots in the rankings – from 15th to 12th. I fully expect the site to reach the first page within the first 45 days of the new site launching. We are expecting a launch date of between now and September 10th. Once we launch I will make a detailed post about what we have done there. Online Degree We purchased this site in mid-July as well and I’m happy to report it’s also on the cusp of launching version 1.0. Online Degree will launch with reviews of several top online schools and a ton of rich content. Since we’ve had the temporary site up for about 5 weeks now, we’ve come on the scene with a ranking...

White Hat SEO 101 – Infographic With Explanation

Please Share This Image: White Hat SEO 101 Level 1 – Getting Prepared Keyword Research – Doing extensive Keyword Research really should be the first part of any SEO plan. Knowing which keywords you want to rank for will dictate everything you do moving forward. More importantly, doing proper Keyword Research will tell you which keywords you can actually rank for. It doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of time and money optimizing your site for ultra-competitive keyword terms that you have absolutely no chance of ranking for. SEOMoz has some amazing keyword research tools that are a great compliment to the Google Keyword Tool. On Page SEO – On Page SEO is the single most important factor in determining where your website ranks. The good news is that it’s one of the few things in SEO where you control 100% of the puzzle. People often jump the gun working on external factors, but the fact of the matter is you should have your On Page house in order before even thinking of external factors. Well written title tags, descriptions, headings, content, incorporating blod & italics text on the page, and tweaking your keyword density are all just a few of the On Page SEO factors you should be considering. On Page SEO is a complicated topic that would require a lengthly post on its own to do any justice. I plan on writing a post like this in the future, but there are already several great posts on this topic out there. SEOMoz has a particularly good one. Site Blog – Having a “blog” for your site...

Terran Marketing Purchases GraphicDesign.com

This announcement got preempted a bit because of my 100th post and a post I made yesterday about Terran Marketing looking to hire a few quality project managers for some of our sites. Nonetheless, I wanted to get a post up about our latest purchase as soon as possible. I feel like graphicdesign.com is another great acquisition for us and here is why….. By The Numbers The Google Keyword Tool has become a virtual home for me over the past few months. I’ve searched so many terms that I can usually take a pretty good stab at how much something gets searched (in a decent range) before I type it in. However, every once in a while there is a term that totally shocks me (either high or low). Graphic Design was definitely once of those terms. When I saw 201,000 exact match searches I thought for sure I forgot to check the “exact” box and that it was still on broad – uh no. This term actually gets 2,740,000 broad match searches. It was one of those holy &#(@ moments where Jim and I just looked at each other and laughed. The math got even more staggering when we saw that the CPCs for this term are flirting with $10.00. In addition to the great search volume and high CPCs, this already semi-developed site currently ranks in the middle of the 2nd page for this term. That is with zero SEO, only 6 pages on the site, and very few links. We speculate that with very little work this site will rank on the first page within a...

Terran Marketing Purchases OnlineDegree.com

I’ve been touting some new purchases for Terran Marketing and I’m excited to finally be able to make a post about one. As the title of this post suggests, our latest purchase is OnlineDegree.com. This is a great play in the ever expanding online education space and we hope to develop a game-changing type site with this one. By The Numbers The numbers in this sector are quite impressive especially when you consider the CPCs are in the $30.00 rage. These are some of the highest CPCs I’ve ever seen, and certainly the highest CPCs for anything in our portfolio now. To compare, Website Hosting has a CPC in the $12.00 range, so this is almost a full 3x more than that. In regards to search volume, “online degree” gets a meager 14,800 exact global searches each month, but is accompanied by 1,220,000 broad searches. So, there are an insane amount of long-tail searches to capture out there. Things like “Online Degree Programs” and “University Online Degree” should be fairly easy to rank for. What Did We Pay We didn’t get a paid appraisal on this one, but EstiBot.com values this domain at $621,000. I personally think that is really high, but we did get some advice from several other people. The general consensus was that this domain is worth a solid $200,000+; we were able to pick it up for $120,000. We closed this deal though Sedo.com, so you should see this sale pop up on Domain Name Journal’s website in the top 25 next week. Next Steps As with all of our projects, our initial focus will...
