Today was the first delivery from our new CSA provided by JR organics, a local San Diego County farm. JR Organics offers over 30 pickup locations in the San Diego and Los Angeles area. We opted for the San Marcos Cal State pickup. Little did we know, there is also a farmers market at this location each Wednesday where JR Organics exhibits. The great part about picking up at this location is that JR Organics allows you to swap out one or two items from your box that you don’t like – with anything else at their stand. We opted to change out the beets for more organic green peppers. Everything else in the box looked great.
CSA box contents week one
Our CSA box this week included Lettuce, Mizuna, Peas (edible pod), Hard Squash, Bell Peppers, Broccoli, Kale, Bunching Onions, Beets, Avocados, Apples. Again, we swapped out the beets for more green peppers. Below are a couple pictures of the box contents.
San Marcos Wednesday Farmer’s market
In addition to JR Organics display at the market, there were also several other local farms and businesses exhibiting. We picked up several other items including homemade bread, organic homemade salsa, homemade organic hummus, cage free eggs, and some vegan Indian food. The Indian food turned out to be dinner tonight and was absolutely amazing. We had Chana Masala and Dal along with fresh-baked Naan.
The farmers market turned out to be a huge bonus. Between our CSA box and the items we picked up from the other vendors, we only needed a couple items from the grocery store. Things like egg whites, blueberries, and bananas which weren’t present at the farmers market.
There were several other wonderful items at the farmers market that are outside my current modified vegan diet. Things like gyros, falafel, cookies, and pies. I don’t know how, but I resisted the temptation.
